b. Frankfurt an der Oder (Germany), March 16, 1693, 
d. Vienna, July 22, 1756, important landscape painter; father of 
Johann Christian  Brand and Friedrich August  Brand, who further 
developed their father's style in their own landscapes. Around 1720 
came to Vienna, where his style started to diverge from the sombre 
Dutch painters he had imitated and to take on a finely graduated 
colourful quality.
