b. Vienna, Nov. 4, 1885, 
d. Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria), Nov. 29, 1973; poet, playwright, 
narrative writer and essayist; brother of Kaethe  Braun-Prager. In the 
tradition of Austrian literature at the turn of the century, his work 
was strongly influenced by religious and symbolic elements. Friend of 
Hugo von  Hofmannsthal; 1928-1938 taught German literature in Italy; 
1939-1951 exile in England, from 1951 lecturer at the Max Reinhardt 
Seminar (drama school) in Vienna; awarded the Grand Austrian State 
Prize in 1951, the Grillparzer Prize in 1965, and the Austrian 
Decoration for Science and Art in 1966.
