b. Florence (Italy), Oct. 16, 1913,
d. Salzburg, April 7, 1988, composer; in Salzburg from 1939, professor
at the Mozarteum; like C. Orff he felt strongly committed to
education. For his predominantly musical dramatic works very often
used historical themes (Der Engel von Prag, 1978 and 1985) and fairy
tales (Der Igel als Braeutigam, 1948; Der Mann im Mond, 1960). Awarded
the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1976.
