Federal Payments Office, set up by statute in 1978, replaced the 
Central Pay Office (Zentralbesoldungsamt); computes and meets most 
payment obligations of the federal government (e.g. salaries of 
federal civil servants, pensions). In 1997 the Federal payments Office 
was spun off from the public administration and transformed into the  
Bundesrechenamt GmbH
