b. Vienna, Jan. 4, 1952, politician (Austrian Socialist Party, SPOe) 
and political scientist. 1978-1984 Chairman of the Socialist Youth 
Organization, since 1983 member of the Nationalrat, 1988-1993 SPOe 
party secretary, 1993-1995 SPOe federal chairman. In 1983 first member 
of the Nationalrat to be elected by means of preferential votes 
(62,457); since 2001 chairman of the parliamentary group of the SPOe.
