Corex%%sup ®/%, new process developed by the VOEST-Alpine AG ( 
VOEST, Vereinigte Oesterreichische Eisen- und Stahlwerke AG) for 
low-cost environmentally sensitive production of crude iron directly 
from carbon and iron ore. In this process a fusion carburettor is used 
instead of a conventional blast furnace, the iron ore is processed in 
a reduction shaft and carbonising and sintering plants have become 
superfluous. The first C. plant was opened in Pretoria (South Africa) 
in 1989.
