!!!Dürnkrut

Duernkrut, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Gaenserndorf, 
alt. 161 m, pop. 2,164, area 30.40 km%%sup 2/%, on the River 
March/Morava on the border to Slovakia. - Customs authority 
department; oldest sugar factory in Austria (1844, closed down 1977), 
food industry (sweeteners, instant drinks, etc.), 2 mills. - Site of 
the Battle of Duernkrut and Jedenspeigen (August 26, 1278) between 
Rudolf I of Habsburg and Otakar II of Bohemia, at which 
Otakar was defeated and killed. Baroque parish church (consecrated 
1698), Renaissance castle (end of the 16%%sup th/%  century), a 
building that stood on the site (documented mention 12%%sup th/%  
century) was destroyed in 1529.
