!!!David, Johann Nepomuk

b. Eferding (Upper Austria), Nov. 30, 1895, 
d. Stuttgart (Germany), Dec. 22, 1977. Composer; father of Thomas 
Christian  David; from 1920 to 1923 studied in Vienna under J.  Marx; 
1924-1934 primary school teacher and organist in Wels; (1934) teacher 
at Leipzig Conservatory, in 1945 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and in 
Stuttgart (1948-1963). Known as a traditionalist and polyphonist, esp. 
in sacred music. Awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1953 and 
the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1966.

!Works
Numerous concertos and symphonies, organ pieces, many sacred 
vocal pieces (Chorale versions after J. S. Bach), chamber music.
