b. Trento (Italy), July 12, 1884, 
d. Innsbruck (Tyrol), Dec. 24, 1974. Meteorologist, geophysicist and 
oceanographer. From 1919 and again 1945-1955 professor at the 
University of Innsbruck, 1927-1945 director of the Institute and 
Museum of Oceanography in Berlin. Led numerous oceanographic 
expeditions (e.g. meteor expedition, 1925-1927) and developed 
oceanography as an exact science.
