Historical Monuments, Preservation of: The preservation and 
restoration of monuments and objects of historical and artistic 
importance are incumbent on the owner of a property; they are, 
however, eligible for subsidies by public authorities (state, 
provinces, municipalities), without any legal obligation to this 
effect on the part of the authorities. During the past decades a 
considerable part of the monuments in Austria have been restored and 
often adapted to new uses. Preservation and re-development of 
town-scapes and urban architectural ensembles have also been carried 
out.
