Diabelli, Antonio, b. Mattsee (Salzburg), Sept. 6, 1781, d. Vienna, April 7, 1858. Composer and music publisher in Vienna, pupil of Michael Haydn in Salzburg; in 1818 founded a music publishing house with P. Cappi; in 1824 founded his own company (publishing works by Beethoven and others, as well as D.'s own compositions; was also Schubert's main publisher) which soon became a centre of the Vienna music scene; in 1851 sold the publishing house. D.'s compositions are related to the prevailing tastes of the era; only one piece has survived: a waltz which Beethoven used as the basis for his 33 "D. Variations" (op. 120).
