Dobrizhoffer, Martin, b. Frymburk, Czech Republic (then 
Friedberg), Sept. 7, 1717, d. Vienna, July 17, 1791. 
Anthropologist, Jesuit, pioneer in the field of South American 
anthropology; 1748-1767 travelled to Paraguay; from 1773 Court 
Chaplain in Vienna. D.'s Latin work "Historia de Abiponibus equestris 
bellicosaque Paraguariae nationae" (3 vols., 1784) was translated 
into German and English. D. also wrote dictionaries and linguistic 
treatises on South American Indian dialects.
