Cathedral (German: Dom), term denoting a bishop's church. The term Dom 
was first used for the accommodation where all the clergymen attached 
to the bishop´s seat lived. It was subsequently used to denote 
the resident college, then the chapter of the cathedral, and finally 
the corresponding church.
