Donauinsel, Vienna, island recreation area enclosed by the River
Danube and by the New Danube (swimming, surfing, rowing, cycling, ball
games, etc.), 21 km long and up to 250 m wide; in a
south-easterly direction it extends from the intake structure at
Langenzersdorf (Lower Austria) to where the New Danube joins the main
stream of the Danube near the Lobau oil transshipping port. In 1972
digging started on the former flood plains for the New Danube (flood
protection basin), which is about 200 m wide today; in 1987 work
on the Donauinsel was finished. The "Copa Kagrana" beach near the
Vienna International Centre has numerous restaurants and leisure
facilities.
