b. Egg (Vorarlberg), Aug. 15, 1809, 
d. Rome (Italy), June 30, 1866. Painter, from 1828 studied under 
J. Schnorr von Carolsfeld and P. Cornelius in Munich. from 
1835 lived in Mitau (Jegava), from 1839 in Vilna (Vilnius), 1841-1853 
in St. Petersburg, then in Rome. Painted historical and genre scenes, 
altarpieces for churches in Russia and portraits of the czar's family. 
Devoted himself exclusively to religious art from 1853.
