ERASMUS, European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University 
Students, largest mobility programme of the EU for students and 
members of a university´s academic staff, in Austria since 
1992/1993. Students are offered financial support to undertake 3-12 
month periods of study at partner universities abroad; the aim of this 
programme is to intensify co-operation between colleges, universities 
and extramural institutions within the European Union. In 1994/1995, 
1,800 Austrian students took part in this scheme, the number of 
foreign students coming to Austria amounted to 850 during the same 
period.
