Ebensee, Upper Austria, market town in the district of Gmunden, alt. 
426 m, pop. 8,734, area 194.48 km%%sup 2/%, lakeside and 
winter resort (72,091 overnight stays) in the Salzkammergut region, 
where the river Traun enters Lake Traunsee. - Landing stage (Traunsee 
Shipping Company), forestry technology enterprise of the 
Oesterreichische Bundesforste AG (Austrian Federal Forests), weather 
station of the Austrian Federal Army, district health and social 
insurance offices, workers´ hostel, Salzkammergut Vocational 
Training Institute, Catholic youth centre, autonomous cultural centre, 
Feuerkogel mountain cable-car (est. 1927, alt. 1,592 m, ski 
slopes) and weather station, vocational training school for fashion 
and clothing (Hoehere gewerbliche Lehranstalt fuer Mode und 
Bekleidungstechnik), public and private commercial school (Fachschule 
fuer wirtschaftliche Berufe), trade and industry (production of soda 
and building materials, cement works, wood processing), saltworks of 
the Oesterreichische Salinen AG (brine pipeline from Hallstatt and 
Altaussee); personal, social and public services, production of hiking 
boots, Rindbach shipyard. Crib carving, traditional customs (for 
example "Gloecklerlaufen" on January 5, carnival customs such as 
"Fetzenzug Fasching" or "Rag Carnival"). - Parish church of 
St. Josef with a Baroque choir (1727-1729 by M. Prunner) and 
Baroque interior (1730-1770), which was extended in 1911, frescoes by 
Karl Reisenbichler (1932/33); the history of salt mining has been 
documented by the museum of local history, in mining tunnel, memorial 
to concentration camp victims who were forced to work the mines; 
Resistance museum. - Vorderer Langbathsee and Hinterer Langbathsee 
Lakes in the vicinity, Lake Offensee (national park) and  
Gassl-Tropfsteinhoehle, a stalactite cave northeast of E.
