b. Vienna, Feb. 20, 1940, lithographer, politician (Social Democratic 
Party, SPOe). Began his career in politics as district Party Secretary 
for Waehring/Vienna; 1969-1986 member of the Landtag of Vienna and 
member of Vienna municipal council; 1981-1986 chairman of the Social 
Democratic faction in parliament, 1986-1994 Secretary for housing and 
urban development in Vienna, 1994-1997 Secretary of finance and 
economic policy. In 1997 became Minister of Finance.
