b. Vienna, June 15, 1928, behavioural scientist. Student of K.  
Lorenz, with whom E. worked at the Institute for Comparative 
Behavioural Physiology in Buldern (Westphalia) from 1951 and in 
Seewiesen (Bavaria); 1970 professor of zoology in Munich, numerous 
expeditions to the tropics; chairman of the Human Ethology Research 
Department of the Max Planck Society in Seewiesen and Andech from 
1975.
