b. Eisenstadt (Burgenland), May 3, 1769, 
d. Vienna, Jan. 12, 1843, son of Joseph  Elssler the Elder, brother of 
Joseph  Elssler the Younger, father of Johann Elssler the Younger 
(later choir master at the Berlin Opera), Theresia  Elssler and Fanny  
Elssler. Factotum and personal copyist of J.  Haydn from 1787 until 
Haydn's death in 1809, after which E. worked as a copyist in Vienna. 
E.'s numerous writings on Haydn are an important original source for 
Haydn research.
