b. Idzików, Poland (then Kieslingswalde), 
d. Eisenstadt (Burgenland), Oct. 26, 1782, musician and copyist; 
father of Joseph  Elssler the Younger and Johann  Elssler. From about 
1760, E. wrote for J.  Haydn (important for the preservation of 
Haydn's earlier works.).
