Epstein, Gustav, Ritter* von, b. Prague (Czech Republic), 1827,
d. Vienna, Sept. 23, 1879, banker, managed his father's cotton
factories in Bohemia until 1854, then founded and managed a private
bank in Vienna; director of the "Privileged Austrian National Bank"
and vice president of the "Imperial Privileged Austrian-Oriental Bank"
in Trieste; 1868-1871 had the E. Palace, both bank and residence,
constructed by the architect Baron T. von Hansen on Dr. Karl Renner
Ring in Vienna (1922-1938 and since 1958 headquarters of the Vienna
City School Board, 1945-1955 headquarters of the Soviet city command).
