d. Vienna, May 25, 1878, physicist and mathematician; from 1819 
professor of physics and mathematics at the Universities of Innsbruck 
and Vienna. 1852 professor of Engineering Science at the Polytechnical 
Institute in Vienna, 1853 organizer of the Physics Institute at the 
University of Vienna. 1847-1850 co-founder and first Secretary General 
of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
