Social Democratic Party, SPOe). 1973-1984 central secretary and from 
1984 chairman of the Union for the Textile, Leather and Clothing 
Industries; 1989-1990 Federal Minister of Health and Public Services, 
1990-1992 Federal Minister of Health, Sports and Consumer Protection; 
since 1996 member of the European Parliament.
