Faehnrich, military rank in the Austrian army held by students at 
Austrian military academies until their promotion to Lieutenant. 
Historically the term Faehnrich referred to a soldier carrying the 
flag. Due to the lack of adequate uniforms, it was common until the 
early Renaissance for the soldiers in a regiment to gather around the 
Faehnrich in order to establish who was friend or foe.
