Assisted Areas or subsidised regions, regional units which receive
special subsidies on account of relatively unfavourable economic
conditions or developments. The OeROK (Austrian Regional Planning
Conference) determines which regions are to receive special subsidies.
The subsidies are intended to improve infrastructure, to provide
financial incentives for businesses, industries or tourist companies
to build there, to secure the agricultural and forestry sectors and
promote active employment policies. According to EU criteria, regions
in Austria are divided into certain subsidy categories. Objective-1
regions encompass underdeveloped regions (Burgenland), objective-2
regions are industrial regions in decline (e.g. both the Mur- and
Muerz valley regions) and objective-5b regions are rural regions with
a high agricultural ratio (e.g. Waldviertel region and Weinviertel
region, Mostviertel region).
