Assisted Areas or subsidised regions, regional units which receive 
special subsidies on account of relatively unfavourable economic 
conditions or developments. The  OeROK (Austrian Regional Planning 
Conference) determines which regions are to receive special subsidies. 
The subsidies are intended to improve infrastructure, to provide 
financial incentives for businesses, industries or tourist companies 
to build there, to secure the agricultural and forestry sectors and 
promote active employment policies. According to EU criteria, regions 
in Austria are divided into certain subsidy categories. Objective-1 
regions encompass underdeveloped regions (Burgenland), objective-2 
regions are industrial regions in decline (e.g. both the Mur- and 
Muerz valley regions) and objective-5b regions are rural regions with 
a high agricultural ratio (e.g. Waldviertel region and Weinviertel 
region, Mostviertel region).
