b. Vienna, July 27, 1909, ethnologist who explored India and the 
Himalayas, 1945-1950 professor in Hyderabad (India). From 1950-1976 
held a chair at the London School of Oriental and African Studies. Has 
conducted large-scale field studies in Assam, in the Deccan, in the 
Himalayas and especially in Nepal and was accompanied by his wife on 
most of his expeditions.
