Factory, industrial production site. Factories were built in Austria 
from the 18%%sup th/%  century. Unlike small manufacturing factories 
producing hand-made articles, industrial factories were equipped with 
machinery and generally employed a large number of workers all working 
in one enterprise. The use of specialised workers, both skilled and 
unskilled, large-quantity output and relatively large capital 
investment were also characteristic of factories.
