Medical Specialists, doctors having received specialised hospital 
training and achieved extensive knowledge and experience in one 
particular area of medicine. The training period for specialists in 
Austria requires a minimum 6 years of study and includes a main area 
of specialisation (3-5 years) and secondary or optional areas of 
specialisation. Dental students are required to complete a two-year 
course of study. For medical studies begun after January 1, 1996, a 
final examination is necessary.
