Civil Status, (marital status) legal and social description of a 
person as regards his/her family status. The accepted terms for the 
different forms of civil status are: single, married, divorced, 
widowed and legally separated. In Austria 3.45 million persons are 
married, 3.2 million single, 663,000 widowed and 270,000 divorced 
(1991 census). There are large regional differences in civil status 
demographics, representing the nature of social developments in the 
area.
