b. Weikersdorf am Steinfeld (Lower Austria), April 5, 1939, went into 
politics after studying law (Austrian People's Party, OeVP), from 1964 
at the Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Chamber, from 1978 head of 
its department of legal and trade policy, from 1982 head of the 
department of economic policy, from 1992-1996 Deputy Secretary-General 
of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, 1996-2000 Federal Minister 
for Economic Affairs.
