Faunal Regions: Thanks to its geographical location, Austria is one of 
the most varied countries in Europe as far as animal species are 
concerned. Austria has many kinds of faunal regions: the Pannonian 
faunal region (in North Burgenland around Lake Neusiedler See and in 
the Vienna basin), the  Alpine Fauna region, the Mediterranean faunal 
region (which includes the wall lizard and the rock swallow which are 
very common), the Baltic faunal region (found throughout Austria with 
the exception of the Pannonian and alpine regions).
