25 (First Day of Christmas) and December 26 (Boxing Day), for
Protestants, Methodists and Old Catholics also Good Friday, but
excluding Reformation Day (October 31). Provincial holidays are school
holidays and holidays for members of certain occupations. Official

According to the Law on Sunday and Holiday Observance of 1983
(Feiertagsruhe-Gesetz) the total time spent not working on the weekend
is to amount to 36 continuous hours and begin on Saturday at 1 p.m. at
the latest. Several exceptions are allowed, for instance, for shift
work, construction, newspapers, hotels, bakers, actors. Leave is also
to be granted for the fulfilment of religious duties. On official
holidays all government offices and courts of law are closed, as are
all schools. Allowance is also made for religious holidays of faiths
other than Christian (Islam, Judaism) in public offices and for
examinations.
