!!!Fernberger von Egenberg, Christoph Carl

b. Ybbs (Lower Austria; ?), around 1596, 
d. Brunn am Gebirge (Lower Austria), Dec. 7, 1653, first Austrian to 
sail around the world. Fought for the independence of the Netherlands, 
shipwrecked on the way back to Austria and saved by a Dutch sailing 
vessel which took him as the first Austrian to South America and the 
Pacific; in 1624 he went to India as a travelling merchant; after 
another shipwreck was sold as a slave in Arabia, but was able to buy 
his freedom and returned to Vienna via Amsterdam.
