Fireworks, display of light, noise etc. produced by the combustion of 
pyrotechnical (explosive or flammable) compositions on festive 
occasions. Fireworks were already customary in the 17%%sup th/%  
century in connection with courtly opera performances and are now 
frequently used as part of public festivities, fairs etc.
