Foundlings, abandoned children, mainly infants whose parents cannot be 
traced. Due to the large number of foundlings, special foundling homes 
were established by hospitals from the 16%%sup th/%  century and by 
cities from the 18%%sup th/%  century onwards. Under Emperor Joseph II 
foster mothers were entrusted with the care of foundlings and were 
paid by the state.
