Confirmation, sacrament of the Roman Catholic Church. For Catholics, 
confirmation means the conferring of the Holy Spirit complementing 
baptism Confirmation is conferred by a bishop or by a pastor empowered 
by him. In Austrian, confirmation has the character of a popular 
feast. Traditionally, confirmands are taken on an excursion and 
receive a present (such as a watch) from their sponsors.
