Timber Floating and Rafting: The transportation of logs bound together
to form rafts was common in Austria until the 19%%sup th/% century.
Salt and iron were also transported in this way on the Danube and its
tributaries; after the goods arrived, the rafts were disassembled and
the logs sold. Wooden rafts were also common on smaller rivers and
streams which were dammed for this purpose (gorges). In the
18%%sup th/% and 19%%sup th/% centuries Vienna was provided in this
way with timber and fire wood. After the railway system was built, the
practice of using rafts for transportation purposes became obsolete.
