Flachau, province of Salzburg, municipality in the district of St. 
Johann, alt. 927 m, pop. 2,210 (1981: pop. 1,892), area 117.26 
km%%sup 2/%, a winter sport resort (799,906 overnight stays) situated 
in the valley bearing the same name where the River Enns originates in 
Pongau. - Flachauwinkel cableway to the Glonerboden peak, Flachau 
cableway; timber processing (sawmill, furniture). - From the late 
Middle Ages until 1866 iron mining and smelting; Baroque parish church 
(1719-1721) influenced by J. L. v. Hildebrandt, Hoech Castle (first 
documented mention in 1209, renovated around 1615, modernised from 
1880 to 1893), castle chapel decorated with coats of arms 
(16%%sup th/%  century); old farmsteads; Thurnschloessl in Feuersang 
(16%%sup th/%  century).
