Standard Size for paper or other objects. In Austria certain formats 
were common until well into the 20%%sup th/%  century: Bricks measured 
in feet (29 x 14 x 7 cm), writing paper 34.5 x 21 cm. Today the German 
industrial standards (DIN) prevail: Bricks, 24.5 x 12x 6 cm; paper, A4 
29.7 x 21 cm.
