Fraktur, form of Gothic script created in the 16%%sup th/%  century 
which increasingly replaced Roman type over the centuries in the 
German-speaking countries. In the 19%%sup th/%  century it began to 
fall into disuse in scientific works, and in 1941 Roman type was 
declared the norm. Until that time the fraktur style of handwriting, 
known in Austria as "Kurrentschrift", was taught as the first style of 
handwriting in primary schools.
