!!!Freytag, Gustav

Freytag, Gustav, b. Neuhaldensleben (near Magdeburg, Germany), 
Jan. 23, 1852, d. Steeg (in the municipality of Bad Goisern, 
Upper Austria), Dec. 19, 1938, cartographer. Came to Vienna in 1866 
and started his own business in 1879. Together with W. Berndt founded 
the cartographic institute F. & Berndt in 1885 ( 
Freytag-Berndt und Artaria KG), which has become well-known for its 
tourist maps used for hiking and walking. Some of these maps were 
updated by F., who inspected the individual regions himself. Together 
with Heinrich Hess F. explored the Ennstaler Alpen, a mountain range 
belonging to the Austrian Alps. F. designed a colour scale for 
physical maps which is still being used today.
