Friesinger, Herwig, b. Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria), 
March 5, 1942, archaeologist. Since 1978 professor at the 
Department of Prehistory and Early History of the University of 
Vienna, 1978-1992 Chairman of the Department, since 1995 secretary of 
the philosophy/history section of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. 
Numerous research expeditions in Austria and abroad, including 
archaeological investigations of a fortified settlement site in the 
Weinviertel region and of settlements dating from the Stone Age on the 
Caribbean islands. Played a major role in establishing a systematic 
archaeological survey of Austria using aerial photography; since 1979 
editor of the archaeological journal "Archaeologica 
Austriaca".
