!!!Gaheis, Franz de Paula

Gaheis, Franz de Paula, b. Krems (Lower Austria), April 1, 1763, 
d. Vienna, Aug. 25, 1809, pedagogue and author, 1780-1788 member 
of the Piarist order. From 1788-1798 headmaster of the basic secondary 
school in Korneuburg, where he established a certain type of school, 
known as the "Arbeitsschule", which focused on teaching by activity 
methods and where he established new teaching methods. Championed the 
introduction of regional history and geography into the curriculum. 
Wrote works on local history and put forward schemes to educate and 
train blind children.

Handbuch einer Methodik f. Schullehrer, Gehuelfen und 
Schul-Candidaten, %%sup 2/%1797; Wanderungen und Spazierfahrten in die 
Gegenden um Wien, 7 vols., 1797-1808; Handbuch der Lehrkunst fuer 
den ersten Unterricht in dt. Schulen, %%sup 4/%1809.
