b. Krefeld (Germany), March 27, 1853, 
d. Stein an der Donau (Lower Austria), June 13, 1916, painter and 
illustrator. Studied at the Duesseldorf Academy, worked as an 
illustrator in Vienna from 1879-1904 after which he moved to Stein. G. 
was renowned for the depiction of special events, genre-pictures of 
country-life and paintings of the Wachau area, made numerous designs 
for wood cuttings.
