Violin-making, in Austria since around 1500; at first the centre of
violin and lute-making was situated in Tyrol, with G. Diffenprucker
(1514-1570), J. Stainer (1621-1683) and the Klotz family (founders of
the Mittenwald violin manufacture) as the most famous exponents. In
the course of the 18%%sup th/% and especially the 19%%sup th/%
centuries Vienna became the leading place for violin and piano-making;
among the many violin-makers were the Thier family, F. Geissenhof and
J. G. Stauffer as well as the Enzensperger, Feilnreiter and Zach
families.
