Fine, sum of money exacted as a penalty. In Austria, fines can only be 
imposed on the basis of decisions by an administrative or judicial 
authority. Should the defendant be unable to pay, the money fine is 
replaced by a prison term. Court fines are assessed on the basis of 
defendant's level of income ("Tagessatz" as a percentage of his/her 
earnings).
