!!!Gerhaert van Leyden, Niclas
b. Leiden (Netherlands), around 1430,
d. Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria), June 28, 1473, famous
sculptor during the late Gothic period. Most important works in
Strasbourg and various German towns, in later years based in Passau
and Wiener Neustadt; created the tomb of Friedrich III in St.
Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and the monument of Empress Eleanore in
the Neukloster ("new monastery") in Wiener Neustadt. G. died before
the completion of Friedrich III's monument and was buried in Wiener
Neustadt. Developed psychologically striking, realistic figures by use
of light and shadow in his modelling techniques and by using
multicoloured marble, which greatly influenced Austrian art of the
late 15th century.
