Gerold, Count, 
d. Pannonia, Sept. 1, 799, brother-in-law of Emperor Charlemagne, 
member of an aristocratic family which supported Frankish rule in 
Bavaria. From 791 governor in Bavaria, then prefect of the eastern 
provinces, died in battle against the  Avars.
