Gertrud, Saint, feast day March 17, b. 626, 
d. March 17, 653 or 659, first abbess of Nivelles (Belgium), daughter 
of Pippin the Elder. Patron saint of field and garden crops (often 
depicted with spindle and mice), esp. venerated in Tyrol 
(St. Gertrud in Haslach); work in the garden and fields begins on 
her feast day. The St. Gertrud-minne was a drinking custom of becoming 
reconciled with or parting from people which can be traced back to the 
11th century.
